Edward A. Fletcher, an American engineer noted for his advancement of the field of solar chemistry. He investigated a wide range of technologies including the thermochemical production of clean energy sources, the production of hydrogen and oxygen from water, the thermal and electrothermal reduction of metals from their ores using sunlight as the prime energy source, and the storage of solar energy by means of thermochemical transformations, such as biomass and coal gasification. These experimental studies use a 4.2-meter, highly concentrating solar furnace he built at the University of Minnesota.
