Wikidata

Wikidata is is a collaboratively edited knowledge base operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is intended to provide a common source of certain data types (for example, birth dates) which can be used by Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia. For example in wikidata you can find the work of Vincent van Gogh: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582.

Reasons

The need of any intelligent storage of data structures was many times urged, for example Czech Wikiversity:Technical needs/G. The possibilities for wikidata are many. Practially anything that can be made into lists, tables and databases, such as:

  1. The periodical table of elements
  2. The table of physical constants
  3. The table of the world events
  4. The database of dreams which is a long-time project on the Czech wikiversity

etc. etc. It is important to develop datasets that are possible to use in multiple languages and across many different project spaces (such as the range of Wikimedia projects). A reasonable solution is to make one common data project that has the discipline of open format standards and reuse and the potential for a large and popular user base much like what Commons: is for images and media.

Problem of data access

MediaWiki php-scripts relay on some database engine, but the tables of this database are practically non-available to users, and so is limited. It is not useful for users to store their own tables or list-objects for example.

Semantics

Using the Semantic MediaWiki extension we could workaround such a restriction. We attempted to have that extension installed into the Wikimedia projects, but our requests to do so, on the Czech Wikiversity for example, have not yet been satisfied.

Schedule

  1. Create the testing wiki on some server which has the semantic extensions implemented yet
  2. Installing and trying the semantic extensions on some own server with root permissions. Testing, searching for the optimal configuration, to gain basicall know-how. The sandbox server would be an ideal place for such experimental work.
  3. Create the page "Wikidata" on en:, de:, get the co-workers and obtain international support for this project
  4. Request for installing semantic extensions on the betawikiversity: and continue there with further experiments – this approach will be more secure as here on the czech wikiversity. Moreover on the betavikiversity is traditionally good language co-operation so there will be a optimal place for testing the multilingual projects. Maybe such solution will be better than the incubator:.
  5. Request for a mediagrant m:Wikimedia chapters/WMF grants for the fiskal year 2010/11 for support of this project
