Von Mises Stress or Equivalent Stress

Von Mises is a criteria used in predicting the onset of yield in ductile materials. The von Mises stress/equivalent stress/distortional strain energy is given by the relation

 \sigma_{\text{eq}} = \sqrt{I_1^2 - 3 I_2} = \sqrt{\sigma_{11}^2 + \sigma_{22}^2 + \sigma_{33}^2 - \sigma_{11}\sigma_{22} - \sigma_{22}\sigma_{33} - \sigma_{33}\sigma_{11} + 3\sigma_{12}^2 + 3\sigma_{23}^2 + 3\sigma_{31}^2}
