Shariah law is based on five major foundations. The one that has most authority is from the Al Quran, the holy book of Islam, and the next is from the Sunnah, or the sayings and actions of Muhammad. Then if an answer to a case has not been found, Ijtihad, Ijma' or Qiyas may be used. Qiyas is analogical reasoning and Ijtihad is independent thought. Ijma' is the consensus of the scholars of repute during that time. Some say that the door to Ijtihad was closed around the 13th century, as all important cases have already been settled by the great Muslim scholars.
