Rock basics are intrinsically related to Blues basics. The most primitive Chord progression is known as the I-IV-V progression. In the key of E, the chords will be E, A and B. In the key of C, the chords are C, F and G. It is also common to make the V into a dominant seventh chord (e.g. G=G7; E=E7). This progression is used in probably 15% of rock songs and should get you started.
