Reiki
Reiki is an ancient Japanese science of healing (see History). It involves the use of REI means universal light & KI means life force energy governing all functions in universe. This helps you heal all kinds of problem by touch or thought.
This is just a complimentary aid to medicine that one can use with REJU i.e. attunement or initiation. Without initiation one cannot use it effectively. Those who try to practice this just by reading a book may get only a part of the healing effect that will be initiated with their own energy, not the universal life force.
Benefits of Reiki
Preliminary study at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, South Glasgow University Hospital NHS Trus Reiki shows that Reiki does not facilitate healing beyond that expected from the placebo effect. While neither the efficacy of reiki nor the existence of ki have been measurably proven at this time Reiki should be considered pseudoscience. according to some people. Yet, there are efforts going on to generate visible healing reports of reiki that can prove reiki to be much more than placibo effect and pseudo science.

History of Reiki
Reiki is a science of an Indian origin, rediscovered by a Japanese priest, Dr. Mikao Usui. In April 1922, Mikao Usui opened his first 'Spiritual Seat of Learning' in Harajuku Tokyo. His teachings were what are called a 'Ronin' (leaderless) method, this was to ensure that no one-person could lay claim to them, then, or in the future. This would keep them freely available for all who wanted to practice. He not only practiced and taught his Spiritual Teachings but also gave healing. From what we now understand of the way he worked, it seems very possible that he was accepted by his Buddhist leaders as a teacher. He was often accompanied by Buddhist monks/nuns and also until about eighteen months before he died his teachings were given only to Buddhist and Shinto followers. He made no provision for his teachings to be continued after his death. He had expected others to come along who would surpass his own capabilities, this did not happen. Curiously Dr. Usui never used the term Reiki for his healing. The term 'Reiki' may have been introduced by Hayashi or the gakkai. The name used by Usui's students is 'Usui Do’ or 'Usui Teate'. Hayashi’s disciples from U.S.A spread The name Reiki.
The popular story about the origin of Reiki is, Dr. Usui believed in answering all questions of his disciples. One disciple asked about the method involved in the touch healing used in Christian faith healing. He did not have the answer. He said he will find out. He went on searching for it. He searched thro’ Japan & china. On finding nothing satisfactory there, he came to India, studied Sanskrit, & some scripts. Then he went to Tibet to study more Buddhist scripts. Here he found PADMA-SUTRAS from PAUSHKAR-SAMHITA (the book on charkas or Body-Lotuses) called Lotus Sutras by the Reiki people. Then he meditated on the mountain Kurama in Kyoto, got enlightenment and got Reiki. Kurama is also a very special place for Martial Arts; it is the abode of the Tengu who impart the secrets of Budo to worthy warriors. Morihei Usheiba, founder of Aikido often took students to the mystical Shojobo Valley to train. Despite what the memorial states it was not usual for this sort of meditation to have been taken on Kurama. However it is recorded that this occurred, but it was very late in his life and long after he had started teaching. In the records, no special event is recorded. In traditional western Reiki a great deal of importance is put on the Kurama story, however, this is not true and not referred to by his students. No evidence is known of his ever being taught in any way by Christian teachers/ministers. He never had any medical training and was never referred to as 'doctor'. This information comes from 'living' students of Mikao Usui some of them are also his relatives.
In 1923 shortly before noon on 1st. September, an earthquake shook Tokyo and Yokohama. Over 100,000 deaths were reported. It was the greatest natural disaster in Japanese history. Mikao Usui with his helpers took his healing to the area and as a result of his work became very famous. During this emergency Usui Sensei's way of giving relief was to 'reach out his hands of love to suffering people'. (Source-Usui Memorial) It is quite possible that as he was living & working in the Tokyo area that his school /home may have been directly affected by the earthquake. Following the earthquake he was awarded an honorary 'Doctorate of Literature', this was in recognition of his services to the public during the emergency. In the last year of his life, the Naval Commanders - Ushida, Taketomi, Hayashi and others, approached him & asked him to teach them. They only learned his healing method. For them he introduced the term 'Ryuku' which means, someone who is a good practitioner but not familiar with the full teachings. There was no formal teaching structure. 'Usui-sensei told that his method is a spiritual healing technique and an energy healing technique. Spiritual healing brings fundamental healing by helping us to become part of the universal consciousness, while energy healing centers around removing the symptoms of mind and body disorders.'
Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai in the Gifu district of Japan. In 1920s he developed a spiritual system based on ancient Taoist practices but uniquely Japanese in style. Usui died from a stroke in a town called on March 9, 1926 in Fukuyama in Hiroshima - Ken. Usui is known to have studied the sect of Buddhism known as Tendai. "In life - Mikao Usui - died third month ninth day first year Showa (March 9, 1926)." The monument to Usui sensei is situated in Tokyo and has a large inscription to 'Usui's Virtue'.
The Markings on Usui’s grave read as: Rei zan ing shu ho ten shin ko ji" which translates roughly to "Spirit mountain title - outstanding praised heavenly heart (mind) layman." This is the literal translation. The "ko ji" or layman denotes he was an ordinary man, as opposed to a priest, monk, etc. The wording of this is typical Jodo Shu (Pure Land) Buddhism. However, Usui Sensei was a devout Tendai Buddhist all his life (according to 2 of his students still alive in 2002). Not many students reached the level of Shinpiden. The term Shinpiden may only mean that a student has reached that level, but not necessarily that he has completed it. One was Toshihiro Eguchi a school teacher, who was Usui's friend and probably helped him with his teaching of healing. He also taught his healing methods in Usui's teaching establishment. These methods are very similar to those used by Hayashi. Eguchi eventually established "Tenohira Ryoji Kenkyu-kai (hand healing research center)". Famous students of Eguchi are Yasukiyo Eguchi, Kohshi Mitsui, and Goro Miyazaki. Eguchi was an authority on Shinto and his teachings reflected this. He also joined the Gakkai which was formed following Usui's death, he left later because of the military nature of the Gakkai membership. He was a good friend of Usui's and may only have joined out of respect for his friend.
Other Shinpiden students: [(Courtesy Hiroshi Doi) These were within the Gakkai & not Usui's students.]
- Juzaburo Ushida Rear Admiral
- Kanichi Taketomi Rear Admiral
- Tetsutaro Imaizumi Rear Admiral
- Yoshiharu Watanabe Admiral (Director of Military Education)
- Chujiro Hayashi Admiral
- Imae Mine Musician
- Sono'o Tsuboi Tea Ceremony Master
- Harue Nagano ?
Some doubt now appears as to what these students gained in Shinpiden, it is most likely they were in what we call Reiki. A gentleman by the name of Masayuki Okada, a Doctor of Literature, was the author of the inscription on Usui Sensei's memorial. The brush strokes were by Naval Rear Admiral, Jusaburo Ushida.
How and from whom to learn Reiki
Anyone who wants to help himself and the humanity can learn Reiki. Reiki can be learnt by any qualified Reiki teacher. One can learn Reiki just in a day or two per level. The basic qualification needed to learn Reiki is a clean & good heart. Age, educational background, religion, belief pattern do not matter. As Reiki is not a faith. It is a scientific fact.
Since in the second level onwards of Reiki needs the use of symbols, it is appreciated that the one who learns Reiki knows to read and write. But it is not strictly necessary. I have taught Reiki to people who have never learned to read and write& to people who are born blind. Some of my blind students are Reiki teachers & are successfully teaching Reiki.
There is no taboo for learning Reiki. All those who wish to learn can approach a good Reiki teacher & learn. For those who don’t have a Reiki teacher nearby, can learn from distance. They can mail the teacher, get literature & get a distance attunement. One can learn Reiki thro’ net with distance attunements given by the master too! This may appear difficult, unbelievable or business like. I have given distance attunements to hundreds of Reiki seekers and they are doing wonderful work with Reiki.
Though simple, the process of teaching Reiki is of tremendous responsibility and so without being properly trained for being a Reiki teacher, one cannot initiate others. I have seen many people telling me that they learned Reiki from somebody who had just learned the first level of Reiki. Remember, when a person learns Reiki, his teacher initiates him to give Reiki. With this initiation, he can treat with Reiki, not initiate.
Some say, they have read initiation process, or seen someone initiating & learned. Remember, one can’t learn this just by reading or by observing, as without proper training, method has no meaning. When you want to learn Reiki, find out a teacher, find out his repute and confirm that the teacher is really experienced. Then approach the teacher, talk to him. Find out how he explains basic information. When you are convinced that the teacher is really good, go ahead & learn.
A person becomes a Reiki teacher after rigorous training during which, the Reiki Grandmaster works on almost all levels of the consciousness of a person. There is a total cleansing that happens during the process of this training. Till the time a person is not spiritually ready to receive the enlightenment, he is not given the grade of a teacher.
There are some persons who claim to teach the teaching method easily. But remember that just as in other things, in Reiki training too there are cheaters. If you learn from them you will receive harm instead of help. So, check your teacher very carefully before you receive Reiki training. Let Reiki guide you in this. Just pray and get results!
How to heal
Reiki healing is very simple. One may just heal by gentle touch on the affected area. This touch need not be direct to the skin. It may even be over the clothes. If it is not possible or desirable to touch the affected body part, one may keep the hand about an inch or two above the affected area over the body avoiding any touch whatsoever! The healer has to keep the hands over the affected area in this way for about three to five minutes. If the problem is more, one may feel vibrations or heat in the hand for a longer time. Then one has to heal for a longer time.
With the advanced levels of Reiki i.e. from the second level onwards, one may heal without touch too. This time, one has to visualize the affected person, body part, event or machine etc. then one has to give Reiki with symbols to heal it. This has to be continued till the energy flow is felt.
When one healing with Reiki, one does not have to totally concentrate. One can heal while watching TV or while reading or doing any work where hands can be free too! At times, when you need to give reriki but your hands are not free; you may even give Reiki with the third eye and heal!
This shows how simple it is to heal with Reiki. Even a child can do this! Of course, many children too are practicing Reiki with wonderful results for better memory and concentration in studies. When healing by distance, the healer can just draw the symbols in air over the imagined or visualized thing and start giving Reiki to the image visualized after a detailed visualization. On doing this for .about three to five minutes, the healing is produced. If one has to create an event, he has to repeat this till the event actually happens. Even in chronic ailments, long treatment in person or by distance is needed. But still, it is definitely much better than long suffering or having no results in spite of many efforts!
Who can heal at what stage
Only the persons who have received the Reiki training as well as Reiju (the Reiki attunement), from a proper Reiki teacher, can heal with Reiki. Just reading the book will not give you the complete power to heal. For this, you have to get REIJU i.e. get initiated into this method from a qualified teacher.
Reiki was taught totally in eight stages, Rokyu, Gokyu, Yonkyu, Sankyu, Nikyu, Ikkyu, Shodan & Nidan.
Of these only three stages are commonly known to people at large. The stages of Reiki are, BEGINNER = Rokyu = Reiki 1, MIDDLE LEVEL = gokyu = Reiki 2, MASTER = Yonkyu = Reiki 3, TEACHER OF REIKI 1 = sankyu = Reiki 4, TEACHER OF REIKI 2= nikyu = Reiki 5, TEACHER OF REIKI 3 = ikkyu = Reiki 6, GRANDMASTER = Shodan = Reiki 7 = teacher of Reiki 4-5&6 & GREAT GRAND MASTER = TEACHER WHO CAN MAKE A GRAND MASTER = Nidan = Reiki 8. This last stage viz. NIDAN is hardly known to anyone. There are really very few teachers with this level. The most common stages that we hear in India are, Reiki 1, Reiki 2, Reiki 3-a & Reiki 3-b. Reiki 3-b makes a person a teacher. Then he has to become a grandmaster after teaching reiki1 & 2 for a few years. Then the seeker hears that actually Reiki has seven stages or sight stages. He does not know what to trust. With this explanation, the seeker remains confused as to how many levels he has to actually go before he can be a teacher.
With a research of twelve years a level between Reiki 3 & 4 i.e. Yonkyu & Sankyu was added, Viz. REIKI-ADVANCE taught by teachers specially qualified to teach this level.
Rokyu i.e. Reiki-1 takes 4 to 10 hours of training depending on the master and the group. This enables a seeker to heal persons, things, machines & house by touch. This healing happens by touching the thing healed physically or by keeping the hand at about one and half inch away from the thing healed.
Gokyu i.e. Reiki-2, takes 4 to 10 hours of training again depending on master & group. Then the seeker can heal from a distance the persons, events or instruments that are anywhere in the globe! This method can be used to convert negative thoughts into positive. This healing is beyond time & space. It heals the past & the future of a person. It heals the issues related to the dead persons too. Yonkyu i.e. Reiki-3, takes 4 to 10 hours depending on the teacher & group. The seeker here can heal faster. He can scan the patient or problem. The master symbol helps him produce more powerful results. Here you learn the popular SWASTIK OM TRISHOOL received in 1993, EH HE YEH.
REIKI-ADVANCE, takes 8 to 12 hours, depending on the group. With this level, a person can scan more powerfully with the REIKI-DOWSING tool. This tool helps to heal faster & powerfully with the help of Reiki angels & ascended masters. He can work on powerful blocks with the ADVANCE SYMBOLS that are directly received from DR. MIKAO USUI in his astral form. Here, you learn ACCU-REIKI. In ACCU-REIKI, you combine ACCU-PRESSURE method with REIKI. You learn REIKI MEDITATION here. This helps you to charge yourself with Reiki in just a few minutes after practice. Also here you learn REIKI PSYCHOLOGY that helps you know the body-mind relation very well. The knowledge of anatomy too is enhanced in this stage. This makes you know the exact problem faster. You also get a glossary of ailments here for a ready reference.
The Sankyu, Nikyu, Ikkyu i.e. Reiki 4-5-6 or Reiki Teacher’s training that includes Sankyu-Reiki 4 = teacher of Reiki 1, Nikyu-Reiki 5 = teacher of Reiki 2, Ikkyu-Reiki 6 = teacher of Reiki 3, is quite rigorous as this is the job of great responsibility. This takes something from 6 months to 2 years depending on the seeker. The seeker has to observe several classes as well as teach several classes in front of the teacher before he is certified as a teacher. The Shodan i.e. Reiki 7 or GRANDMASTER is a teacher of Reiki 4-5&6. This training is given after a teacher has conducted several Reiki training sessions. This too lasts from 6 to 12 months depending on the teacher & the seeker. Here deeper work happens on the being of the seeker as he has to have the power to light further candles of Reiki! A grandmaster can make other grandmaster too! After this stage he is on his own! He has to develop with his own research and guidance from and connections with masters. NO record has been found of a Grand Master level in Japan. (The title Grand Master seems to be something Mrs. Takata may have given to Mr. Hayashi her teacher) Reiki did not disappear from Japan at any time, not even during the war, as claimed in a newspaper article about Hawayo Takata. She was probably not aware of Usui's society or that it still existed. No one person was appointed by Usui, or anybody else, to continue his spiritual lineage.
What is attunement
Attunement is the initiation into Reiki. When a person is learning Reiki, he does not just learn to place hands or draw symbols & heal. He also receives the connection to the universal life force from his master teacher.
The process of establishing this connection is attunement. The process of giving this attunement is to be kept secret by the master teacher. The reason behind this is that when a person becomes a master teacher, he has to shoulder lots of responsibilities.
Unless he is prepared to take these responsibilities of universal healing and unconditional working on humanity, he is not given the secret method of attunement. This is only because, if a person somehow manages to get these methods from somewhere and start attuning when he is actually not spiritually prepared to take up the responsibility of unconditional universal healing of humanity, he may not be able to take the heavy energies needed in this type of healing. As a result, he may suffer from a severe breakdown that may take a very long time to overcome!
The attunement of first degree a person becomes a Reiki channel. This enables a person to heal by touch. A Reiki1 channel can heal persons, premises, things, vehicles as well as machines & electronic goods etc.
The attunement of second degree channels a person to heal from a distance. With Reiki 2 attunement, a person can heal anyone who is at any distance whatsoever. He can even heal a person whom he has never seen. This healing can happen by name or through photograph. A Reiki 2 channel can also work on nature and natural events. He can create events with the help of Reiki; he can heal past as well as future. There are many more things he can do with Reiki 2 attunement as this attunement breaks the time space limits that usually bind a person.
The attunement of the third degree enables a person to heal with more powerful energies. Now the healer can create the events not just as a channel, but as a master who can create the events at his will. Here, the master owns the responsibility of the consequences that follow.
In Reiki advance attunement, the healer gets the power to use the advance healing symbols received from Dr. Usui, the power to transmit Reiki thro’ Accu-Reiki points and to heal with Reiki dowsing. Rekhaa Kale 12:12, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
