- How much do we know about Global Warming? Is it happening? What are the possible scenaria? Who win? Who lose?--Hillgentleman|Talk 02:27, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think, Global Warming exist, its happening, but I am not sure, that it is a problem. Melting ice is going to make sea levels rise, thus changing precipitation patterns. This will entail changes in weather events that will cause the extinction of some plants and animals species devastating the Earth and making human living on this planet impossible. Ecologist would say: "Its happening.", economist would say: "Its a problem.".--Juan 15:31, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Do you experience/feel it already yourself?
If so, what have you done to minimize it (reason to personalize it more, so people can not say: Well, I can not do anything about it, my voice does not count)? ----Erkan Yilmaz (evaluate me!, discussion) 06:03, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- I like the idea of this project. Could the page be renamed to something more descriptive like The social consequences of global climate change. Climate change could act as a catalyst to address the underlying issues of the distribution of resources. It is often claimed that a minority of the worlds population use the majority of its resources, something like 25% of the worlds population uses 75% of the resources (need to research actual figures). It is further claimed that this is unlikely to change because the people with the power to make significant changes are those who benefit the most from the current situation. It could be claimed that everyone is effected by climate change and everyone is responsible for climate change. I'd be interested in a learning project that investigates these issues as they relate to climate change. Mystictim 10:07, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Can there be added some kind of animation, which shows what happens, when I modify some influences? Perhaps this already exists somewhere in the web? ----Erkan Yilmaz (evaluate me!, discussion) 18:59, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- This distributed weather modeling project might provide what you are after. We (someone else, I already setup two others and my screensaver is saturated) could establish a Wikiversity.orgScreensaver_Project team if they are set up for it like most BOINC distributed processing projects are. Might get us a little publicity while helping consolidate useful scientific results regarding global warming cause and effect. Mirwin 08:05, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think what would be a drive is, that people really realize on their own that it is happening like Hillgentleman tells. Reading only about it and exploring it are different things. How about: participants of this project/course from all over the world measure their daily temperature for a certain time period? I know that there are values from observation stations and other sources, but so this makes it more personal. There are probably other ways for this too. ----Erkan Yilmaz (evaluate me!, discussion) 22:06, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think your idea to get people personally involved with this project is excelent. However it is important to make a clear distinction between weather and climate. Weather refers to specific local conditions, snow, rain fall, temperature, storms etc that change from minute to minute and hour by hour. These vary in frequency and intensity in complex patterns that are difficult to predict or to identify the specific courses. Climate refers to long term patterns and average values, like the seasons, the climate of the tropics and the Arctic, or average temperature and rainfall. Climate also follows complex patterns that are difficult to predict. We are now beginning to understand these and identify the courses of climate change. The difference between climate and weather can be illustrated by comparing predicting the temperature one day next week and in 6 months time. Both of these specific temperatures depend on the local weather and are difficult to predict. However the average temperature in six months is easer to predict because it will be similar to the average temperature from previous years. In your example above temperature depends on both local weather and climate so is difficult to predict and even harder to determine what coursed any changes. An alternative would be to measure the changes in the seasons which depends more on climate than local weather conditions. We already have a project that is investigating this at the Bloom clock project. Mystictim 13:21, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- Today New York has her first snow this winter.--Hillgentleman|Talk 06:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well in Karlsruhe (Germany) today it snowed also since long time. ----Erkan Yilmaz (evaluate me!, discussion) 21:22, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- There is a lot of information around. The difficulty is in understanding it. In fact, probably nobody understands it. I have not heard of anybody saying anything with any certainty. I believe that it is happening, that we are causing it, and that it is not good. But to make me change my behaviour drastically, or even any really concrete change... I need to know more. ---Hillgentleman|Talk 06:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- It would be interesting to look at some of the climatic change models in wikipedia:Global climate model. --Hillgentleman|Talk 06:47, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- Since 2001(?) Intergovernmental Panel on Climatic Change( http://ipcc.ch ) has published several huge reports. Very notable is Climate Change 2001 http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/ . We may check some of its short term predictions (if there are, I don't remember...) and study some long term predictions. ---Hillgentleman|Talk 06:53, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- One possible entry point of this report is its road map.--Hillgentleman|Talk 07:56, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- I guess you know, that there already exists a German Wikiversity course? ----Erkan Yilmaz (evaluate me!, discussion) 19:28, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you. I am not fluent in German. If things get going, we may consider hosting the course simutaneously in two languages.--Hillgentleman|Talk 02:03, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- We are very lucky in that International panel on climate change will be releasing it's "Fourth Assessment Report" over the next 3 months. I suggest that we use these reports as the basis for a study group. The first report to be released will be Working Group I "The Physical Science Basis" released on 2nd of February. Working Group II "Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability" report will be released at the beginning of April and the Working Group III "Mitigation of Climate Change" will be released at the beginning of May. This would give us 2 months to study the scientific basis of climate change until April. We would then have a month to look at what effect these changes are likely to have and then from May onwards we could look at what can be done. In particular I would be interested in looking at this information in terms of the public perception of science. Mystictim 17:40, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- While it would need many years of data to see any trends, the Bloom clock would presumably show evidence of global warming as flowering times shift earlier and later. --SB_Johnny | talk
- I think will be a nice project If this will learn us, participative learning, to act against global warming, to act to inform others. For me for example is very interesting relation between consciousness and weather. Every time when colective consciousness is coherent I observed a modification in weather trends like clear atmosphere, rain, nice wether. For example even if I am not so religious Iobserved every time when is a great holiday is a weather response. Can we act in that way ? Group meditations, great concerts, great events can contribute? Can we describe some frames to colectively act for that way of impact on environment ? Will be nice to have a good colection of resources comented. For example U know that weather.com has an area dedicated to this subject and is great are Sorinelb 05:30, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- Global warming is a treat if it really exist, one should not that it follows a precautionary principle(100% proof unavailable)
- The media has helped put fear in to people by exaggerating some facts. Take note that temperatures were just 4 degrees celcius colder in the Ice Age, and a 0.5 degree celcius increase has been recorded since 1850, the start of the industrial era. Global warming thus can be a natural occuring phase of the earth. Other theories suggest Sunspot activities for increases in temperature. Left to me, the earth is showing signs of ageing and how doom is yet to come. Boserup an economist of 80's said neccessity is the mother of invention. - As far as resources go, people involved in this project should check out The Manpollo Project, which has some great videos dealing with Global Warming. --Luai lashire 14:43, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hello guys, i'm doing my MSc Final project Thesis and for an animated short i'm keen in doing something regarding what GOAL of this page states i.e. "to increase awareness, but also mobilize people to minimize the global warming" reading various articles and looking into causes and effects of global warming brought me to this page and it seems as if i can produce something that can help us achieve this goal. any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. thnx. - Nice that you are here. Any help is appreciated - you could share your ideas here if you like, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 14:49, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
I just added my suggestions in a new article called "juridical national measures on climate change". You can find the link at Topic:climate change
