Human societies have been "typing" people in terms of their physiology and psychology for thousands of years. Typing allocates a person to single, discrete categories and is to be distinguished from the trait approach.

Greek humours

The ancient Greeks considered there to be four types of personality which was determined by excesses of different types of bodily fluids.

Choleric yellow bile Irritable
Melancholic black bile Depressed
Sanguine blood Optimistic
Phlegmatic phlegm Calm
