Motivation and emotion - About this unit

Syllabus

Motivation and Emotion will cover drives and instincts, theories of motivation, consciousness and volitional behaviour, self-control, and self-regulation, the structure and function of emotions, relationships between emotion and cognition, and the regulation of emotions.

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to integrate theories and current research towards explaining the role of motivation and emotions in human behaviour.

Prerequisites

  1. Psychology 101 and Psychology 102, or permission of unit convener.

Delivery mode

This unit is delivered in flexible mode via:

  1. Lectures: 12 x 2 hour on-campus lectures, with video and audio recording.
  2. Tutorials: 6 x 2 hour face-to-face or virtual tutorials, with recording of virtual tutorials
  3. Materials: Lecture, tutorial, and assessment materials are available online via the unit websites (Moodle and Wikiversity).
  4. Discussion: Use the Moodle forum and follow and use the #emot15 hashtag on Twitter and other social media to discuss the unit.

Assessment

Requirements

  1. A final overall mark of 50% or higher is required to Pass the unit. Partial final marks will be rounded up. The UC grading schema (HD = 85+, DI = 75 to 84, CR = 65 to 74), and P = 50 to 64) will be used.
  2. The assessment items are:
    1. Book chapter (50%; due 9am Mon Week 12)
    2. Multimedia (20%; due 9am Mon Week 13)
    3. Quizzes (30%; due 9am Mon Week 14).
  3. Completion of the Book chapter and Multimedia involves participating in social media platforms and creation of, or use of existing, social media platform accounts. Anonymous accounts can be used.
  4. Alternative assessment which satisfies the learning outcomes and graduate attributes for the unit may be negotiated with the unit convener where reasonable grounds are presented (e.g., support from Inclusion and Welfare). The onus is upon the student to negotiate alternatives. In the absence of email communication to the unit convener requesting alternative assessment, it is assumed that participation in the standard assessment exercises is willingly undertaken.

Book chapter 50% Online book chapter up to 4,000 words (4,500 for G students); Author an online, publicly available, book chapter about a unique, specific motivation and/or emotion topic. Includes a social contribution component. ~50 hours: 8 hours to learn "how", 20 hours research, 22 hours preparation.
Multimedia 20% Online multimedia presentation up to 3 mins; Record and share an online presentation about the key problem(s) and answer(s) to a unique, specific motivation or emotion topic. Address the same topic as covered in the book chapter. ~10 hours: 2 hours to learn "how", 6 hours preparation, 2 hours to record & finalise.
Quizzes 30% 17 online quizzes, one per chapter; equally-weighted 10-item online multiple-choice quizzes, one quiz per textbook chapter ~90 hours: 12 lectures (x 2 hours each; 24 hours), 6 tutorials (x 2 hours each; 12 hours), 17 chapters (x ~3 hours each; 48 hours) and 6 hours completing the quizzes.

Extensions

  1. Assessment extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
  2. Students are expected to work on the assessment items throughout the teaching period. Early communication of problems is strongly advised. Students should assess within the first few weeks of semester whether they have a reasonable likelihood of being able to complete the unit and should consider withdrawing by the census date if required.
  3. To request an extension, email the unit convener from your university email account and include:
    1. Subject line should include:
      1. unit name
      2. assessment item(s) name
      3. "extension request”
    2. Email message body should include:
      1. Your name and student ID
      2. unit name
      3. assessment item(s) name
      4. length of extension requested
      5. reason for the extension request
    3. Attachment(s) providing documentary evidence, for example:
      1. A medical certificate signed by a registered medical, dental, or health practitioner. The certificate must contain the registered provider number, the duration of the student’s incapacity to study, and the date of consultation.
      2. A death notice or other appropriate documentation for bereavement.
  4. The unit convener will consider the request and send an email reply to advise the outcome. If approved, the new due date will also appear in Moodle.
