Area Control and Area Influence are mechanisms used in board game design. Typically area control is awarded to the player who has most or a majority of pieces in any given area. In this way, it can be viewed as a sub-category of Auction/Bidding as players can increase their "bids" for any specific area by placing more pieces there.
