Habit: | herbaceous forb | Flowers: | Unlike most other members of Cypripedium, the pouch of C. acaule opens in a slit that runs down the front of the labellum rather than a round opening. | Foliage: | The plant consists of two plicate leaves near the ground. | Stem: | A long, pubescent stalk bears a single pink flower. | Growing Conditions: | C. acaule grows in a variety of different habitats, including moist and dry soils. It is usually found in pine forests, where it can be seen in large colonies, but it grows in deciduous woods, as well. It is nearly always found in soil with high acid content. | Life Cycle: | Perennial |
