Sri Lanka is a country in Southern Asia. Sri Lanka is known for having the biggest tea distribution in the world. Sri Lanka is also well known for being a hotspot for tourists. Ever since Marco Polo's discovery of Sri Lanka as the "finest island in the world" in 1292, Sri Lanka has been a destinations for many European travelers, in which those travellers called it The Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

The deadly Sri Lankan Civil War, however, played a very negative role in the tourist business in Sri Lanka, but ever since the civil war ended in 2009, it's been a great tourist place for many. In 2012, the post office worldwide holiday costs barometer named Sri Lanka a great destinations for holidays/breaks.

Sri Lanka currently has 8 presidents, in which the current president of Sri Lanka is Maithripala Sirisena. Sri Lanka used to be a Portuguese colony (explored by Francisco de Almeida), then a Dutch colony (explored by Joris van Spilbergen), and finally a British colony, until its independence in around the 1950s/1960s.

Where is Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is located in Asia, South Asia to be specific. From Sri Lanka's Jaffna to India's Rameswaram, it is 55 miles apart. There is also an Adam's Bridge, a bridge from Southern tip of India to North coast of Sri Lanka. It is believed to be a land piece that connected Sri Lanka to India.

Sri Lanka is northeast of the Maldives, south of India, east of the Arabian Sea, and west of the Bay of Bengal.

How many people live in Sri Lanka?

Such a tiny country, yet so many people! As of 2013, about 20.48 million people have been living in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is growing at a rate of 0.913% per year.

Sri Lanka has several languages due to the diverse cultures, but Sri Lanka's official languages are Tamil and Sinhalese. Sinhalese is spoken by around 16 million people in Sri Lanka, and is widely recognized as Sri Lanka's mother tongue. Sinhalese comes from the Indo - Aryan Branch.

Tamil is a classical language, and it is an old language! Oldest language of the Dravidian language family. Not only is it spoken in Sri Lanka, but as well as India, Singapore, and Malaysia! In 1996, Tamil was the 18th most spoken language in the world, with 74 million speakers worldwide.

English is widely spoken in Sri Lanka as well, and is taught in schools.

The common religion in Sri Lanka is Buddhism. But they're are other religions as well in Sri Lanka, which are Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.

What is the sport in Sri Lanka?

The main sport of Sri Lanka is cricket, and currently has a big team that plays in Cricket Games, called the Sri Lanka Cricket team. Sri Lanka is one of the nations that are full members in cricket, and also the five that has one the Sri Lankan Cricket World Cup, in 1996. But Sri Lanka is not all about cricket!

Sri Lanka also plays rugby and soccer, but they aren't very well known for that sport as with Cricket. Sri Lanka has a national soccer team called the Sri Lankan National Soccer team (used to be called Ceylon National Soccer team as a British Colony until 1972, when Sri Lanka gained independence) and have several rugby teams.

As also, the only sport in which the players are being paid for playing is Cricket, rest of the sports are probably only for pride.
