NTFS (or NT File System) is a proprietary file system created by Microsoft. This is the default file system used on a system using Windows NT, Windows Server, Windows XP, and Windows Vista, Windows 7.

Although this file system is proprietary, there are open-source applications that are able to reliably read/write to it, for instance NTFS-3G.
