Emergency Medicine/Coma

A coma is profound state of unconsciousness. To determine if someone is in a coma it is recommended to use the glasgow coma scale.

The glascaw coma score is in a scale of three to fifteen, three being the worst.

Eye response

• 4- Eyes open spontaneously
• 3- Eyes open after verbal command
• 2- Open when in pain
• 1- No response

Verbal response

• 5- Oriented (responds properly)
• 4- Disoriented
• 3- Inappropriate response
• 2- Unintelligible sounds
• 1- No response

Motor response

• 6- Obeys to verbal command correctly
• 5- Localizes to pain
• 4- Withdrawal to pain
• 3- Can flex to pain
• 2- Extend to pain
• 1- No response
