The Santa Claus opening (created by Chess.com user X_PLAYER_J_X) is a relatively new chess opening named after Santa Claus, as it was created on Christmas Eve. It consists of two white moves and one black: 1. e4 e5 2. b3

This opening allows the bishop on c1 to have room to attack the pawn on e5.

One variant on the Santa Claus opening is called the Grinch Defense. Black plays Nf6, attacking the pawn on e4. This variant is known as the Grinch Defense because just as the Grinch tried to steal Christmas in the classic Dr. Seuss book, the knight now on f6 is trying to "steal" the pawn on e4.
