During
World War II the
United States produced many Gato-class
submarines. These submarines were powered by four diesel engines and ran on battery power when underwater. Gato submarines had both fore and aft
torpedo tubes. They were deployed in the
Atlantic Ocean and
Pacific Ocean. They used a double-hulled design, pioneered by the
German U-Boats.
Several Gato subs are on display in the United States. For instance, the USS Cobia[?] (SS-245) is at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. See their web site for details: http://www.wimaritimemuseum.org/sub.htm
