Dolores Hidalgo is a small city in the state of
Guanajuato,
Mexico. Dolores Hidalgo is located at 21.17°N 100.93°W, at an elevation of about 6200 feet above
sea level. In
2000 it was estimated to have a population of about 50,000 people.
The city was a small town known simply as
Dolores when
Miguel Hidalgo uttered his famous cry for the independence of Mexico (the "
Grito de Dolores") here on
September 16,
1910. After Mexico achieved independence, the town was renamed "Dolores Hidalgo" in his honor.
