Craven County, North Carolina

Craven County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 91,436. Its county seat is New Bern6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,005 km² (774 mi²). 1,835 km² (708 mi²) of it is land and 170 km² (66 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 91,436 people, 34,582 households, and 25,071 families residing in the county. The population density is 50/km² (129/mi²). There are 38,150 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.94% White, 25.12% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.78% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 4.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 34,582 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 12.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 12.80% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 101.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,966, and the median income for a family is $42,574. Males have a median income of $28,163 versus $21,412 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,423. 13.10% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.50% are under the age of 18 and 11.00% are 65 or older.
