Ahmadiyya

Redirected from Ahmaddiya

The Ahmadiyya are a controversial messianic[?] sect that began in India during the British reign. The movement was begun in 1899 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian[?], a muslim who rejected many of the conventional Islamic teachings and according to some declared himself a 'true prophet of Islam'.

The Ahmadiyya movement has been rejected by 'mainstream' muslims, and an official law was passed in Pakistan in 1974 declaring Ahmidiyyans 'non-muslims' and forbidding them to call their places of worship 'mosques' or to use the traditional muslim call to prayer in their worship.
