Description of the versions archived here
This history has been compiled by Harri K. Salminen originally for
the Heureka science center. The
original standalone version was designed for a 1024x768 screen with
Netscape in a kiosk mode and enhanced with embedded 2Mbit/s MPEG-1
clips. This version is also available as an alternative. The web
version of the history has still images instead of embedded videoclips
with links to the FUNET-TV
mediaserver for the clips. So if you wish to see the optional
clips you need either the SGI Mediabase
player and high quality network connection to FUNET or you can FTP
the MPEG-1 clips for local playback. As an experiment the videos are now
of a multiformat type so that if you install the Mediabase Low Bit Rate
player instead of an MPEG-1 capable player (e.g. Compcore or DirectShow)
you will get just a 33Kbit/s version in a very small size suitable for modems.
Other changes may appear later as well as more links to the web. There's only 9 video clips and
you can learn the main historical points without them too. Most of the
clips are from the Internet, Web What's Next conference held at CERN
which is also available in separately in full length form. Please note that the
mediaserver is mainly aimed for FUNET member sites with high speed connections and the access to video on demand streams may be
restricted for others.
The history does have special emphasis on the Finnish University and Research network
which is maintained by the writer's employer Center for Scientific Computing. No
warranty whatsoever, please check at original sources if necessary.
